A new Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania has been established in Calgary with jurisdiction covering the province of Alberta. The consulate is headed by Honorary Consul Marius Jonelis, a businessman and active member of the Lithuanian community.
Alberta—particularly the cities of Calgary and Edmonton—has historically been one of the centers of the Lithuanian community in Canada. Since 1923, active Lithuanian communities have been operating in Alberta, preserving Lithuanian identity and culture. It is estimated that more than 4,000 people with Lithuanian roots live in Alberta, with Lithuanian communities and heritage schools functioning in both Edmonton and Calgary.
The activities of the Honorary Consulate in Calgary will help promote economic, cultural, and academic cooperation between Lithuania and the province of Alberta, as well as strengthen ties with Lithuanians living in the province.
