Ambassador E. Meilūnas presented Letters of Credence to the Governor General of Canada

On January 16, the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Canada, Egidijus Meilūnas, presented Letters of Credence to Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon.

The official ceremony was followed by a conversation between the Ambassador and the Governor General, during which they discussed prospects for deepening bilateral relations between Lithuania and Canada, the security situation in Europe and global geopolitical challenges.

During the conversation, Ambassador Meilūnas emphasized that Canada is a crucial transatlantic partner for Lithuania. "We will strive to deepen bilateral cooperation in the areas of security, defence and economy, as well as to strengthen ties between people of Lithuania and Canada. We are pleased that the Lithuanian community in Canada plays an important role in strengthening the partnership between the two countries," said Mr. Meilūnas.

The Ambassador also thanked Canada for its outstanding contribution to the security of the Baltic region and stressed the need for democracies to unite even more in the fight against authoritarian regimes' attempts to destroy the world order based on international law.

Lithuania and Canada established diplomatic relations in 1937. Canada has never recognised the occupation of Lithuania and the other Baltic States, and bilateral diplomatic relations were restored on 2 September 1991.

In 2023, the trade turnover between Lithuania and Canada amounted to €144 million, Lithuanian exports amounted to €105 million and Canadian investment in Lithuania amounted to €347 million. According to the Canadian census, there are more than 52 000 people of Lithuanian origin living in Canada.
