If the deceased citizen was insured in Canada, the insurance company will handle the repatriation of the body and take care of all the necessary formalities.

If the deceased citizen was not insured in Canada, the family must arrange for the repatriation of the body and cover all associated costs, either personally or by contacting a funeral services company. A contract for the repatriation of the body must be issued by this company, and a notarized power of attorney will be required to organize the repatriation.

IMPORTANT: Diplomatic missions or consular offices of the Republic of Lithuania abroad do not organize the repatriation of deceased citizens or their funeral arrangements. This responsibility lies with the family members or a funeral service company authorized by them. Diplomatic missions or consular offices do not provide social benefits in the event of death, nor do they assist in applying for or paying such benefits.

If you plan to repatriate the deceased's body from Canada to Lithuania, please contact the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Ottawa. If the body is transported in a coffin, the Lithuanian Embassy will issue a permit to repatriate it. If the body is being transported in an urn, no permit from the Lithuanian Embassy is required. A special certificate for transporting the urn is issued by the cremation facility.

If the family of the deceased person does not have the funds to repatriate the body, they may apply for financial assistance from their local municipality in Lithuania. The municipality may provide financial support based on submitted documents that prove the costs of repatriating the body. Such assistance is available if the deceased was not insured or when the event is not covered by insurance, and the family or close relatives have low income.
