Diplomatic relations were established in 1937.
Gerald L. P. Grant-Suttie served as the first Lithuanian envoy.
Canada never recognized the forcible incorporation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union.
On 26 August 1991, Canada recognized the Independence of Lithuania.
On 2 September 1991, diplomatic relations between Canada and Lithuania were re-established.
From 1995 to 2000, Prof. Alfonsas Eidintas served as the first Lithuanian Ambassador to Canada after re-establishment of independence (until 1997 resided in Washington, D.C.).
From 1995 to 1997, Jonas Paslauskas served as the Chargé d'Affaires in Ottawa.
