Notary services procedure

Before visiting the embassy for a power of attorney, it is essential to know the name, surname, personal identification number and place of residence of the authorised person, and to know as precisely as possible the actions to be carried out by the authorised person. You also need to know as much information as possible about the bank accounts mentioned in the power of attorney (name of the bank, account number), the immovable property (unique number, address), and, in the case of a power of attorney for the acceptance of an inheritance, the deceased person's details (personal identification number, date of death), etc.

General powers of attorney are not notarized at the embassy.

Consular officials may draft powers of attorney, transactions, wills and declarations at the request of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, for a fixed fee.

Declarations regarding the acceptance of inheritance cannot be notarized at the embassy. If a citizen cannot personally submit the declaration in Lithuania, it is recommended to authorize someone in Lithuania to do so on their behalf.

All parties signing the contract must be present at the embassy when the contract is concluded.

If you are unable to come to the Embassy in person, you can have the document notarised in Canada by a local notary and then authenticated by Global Affairs Canada or Canadian notary with an Apostille (more information here). This document will have legal effect in Lithuania.

The notarised document must be accurate, clear and written in the correct Lithuanian language (in Lithuanian characters) on good quality paper. The terms, dates and figures in the document must be written at least once in words. Documents containing corrections, additions, deletions, words crossed out and other undiscussed alterations, as well as documents written in pencil, cannot be certirfied.

Information on consular fees can be found here.

Important: Consular officers do not perform notarial acts for foreigners, stateless persons, or legal entities.
