Information for detained persons

Assistance for Detained, Arrested, Incarcerated, or Suspected Criminals

The Embassy can:

  • Help contact family and friends;
  • Ensure the detained person’s rights are respected;
  • Visit detention/incarceration facilities if requested and assess the need for a visit;
  • Ensure that the conditions of detention for a Lithuanian citizen are no worse than for others in the facility;
  • Provide general information about the legal system of the host country;
  • Assist family members with transferring money;
  • Issue a travel document for returning to Lithuania and accessing material assistance;
  • Facilitate the serving of the remaining part of the sentence in Lithuania.

The Embassy cannot:

  • Act as a translator;
  • Provide legal advice or recommend a specific lawyer;
  • Determine the person's guilt or attempt to secure their release from prison;
  • Demand better conditions of detention for a Lithuanian citizen than for others in the facility;
  • Interfere with the host country's law enforcement;
  • Pay bail, fines, or provide financial support;
  • Conduct searches for the detained citizen (this is the responsibility of the police);
  • Inform relatives about the detained person against their will.
