COMMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
After a phone call from Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili to President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus on 7 August and Georgia’s request to help informing the European Union about the current situation in South Ossetia, prompt action was taken to heed the attention of the EU to the situation in this region. The EU statement regarding this issue is also already made.
We wish to notice once more that the events of the latter days only continue to cast doubts whether the country who proclaims itself as a peacemaker, can carry out such mission. This is confirmed by tonight’s deliberations at the UN Security Council. Lithuania has said more than once and today we can repeat again that it is necessary to change the present non-effective peacekeeping mechanisms and frameworks as soon as possible.
We think that right now the EU has a chance to use political and diplomatic means to normalise the situation in the region. We are sure that a more active involvement of the EU and other international bodies would result in taking a step forward.
