Leaders and teachers of Lithuanian schools in Canada gathered to discuss educational development

On November 1–2, a conference of Lithuanian school principals and teachers in Canada took place in Toronto. The event emphasized the need to expand Lithuanian education in Canada, create new opportunities to learn the Lithuanian language—including through remote learning formats—strengthen ties and cooperation with Lithuania, and undertake initiatives that unite Lithuanian schools.

The participants of the conference were greeted by Egidijus Meilūnas (Ambassador of Lithuania to Canada), Kazimieras Deksnys (President of the Lithuanian Canadian Community), and Vaida Matuzonienė (Chair of the Community’s Education Council). Greetings were also extended from Raminta Popovienė (Lithuania’s Minister of Education, Science and Sport), Alvija Černiauskaitė (Chair of the World Lithuanian Community Education Commission), and Donata Simonaitienė (Head of the Association of Lithuanian Schools).

Forward-looking discussions were inspired by presentations delivered by guests from Lithuania—Virginija Rinkevičienė (Head of the Department for Lithuanians Abroad at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport) and Vilma Vilkytė-Žemaitaitienė (teacher at Vilnius Lithuanian Home School) —as well as by representatives of Lithuanian schools in Canada.

On the occasion of the conference, awards from Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Education Commission of the Lithuanian Canadian Community were presented to long-time educators for their dedication and contributions to Lithuanian education.

The conference was organized by the Lithuanian Canadian Community, its Education Council, and the Embassy of Lithuania to Canada.
