Commemorations of Lithuania’s Independence Day held across Canada brought together the Lithuanian community as well as representatives of Canada’s political and public life, business, and academia in various cities throughout the country.
In the capital, Ottawa, a ceremonial reception was held this year, attended by distinguished members of the Canadian Parliament and Senate, representatives of the embassies, leaders of public organizations, and members of the business and Lithuanian communities. The event emphasized the friendship between Lithuania and Canada, shared democratic values, and the active role of the diaspora in strengthening bilateral ties.
A beautiful tradition has also become the February 16 commemoration at Ottawa City Hall, where the Lithuanian tricolor was raised in honor of the occasion. This symbolic gesture each year serves as a reminder of Lithuania’s history, importance of independence, and the support of Canadians.
One of Canada’s most famous natural landmarks, Niagara Falls, was also spectacularly illuminated in the colors of Lithuania. Shining in green, yellow, and red, the Falls attracted Lithuanians and their friends who gathered to mark the historic date and take commemorative photos.
February 16 was also actively celebrated in other Canadian cities, where Lithuanian communities organized a variety of events, gatherings, hikes, concerts, and educational initiatives.
