LITHUANIA'S PRESIDENT MET WITH THE SLOVENIAN LEADER

Tuesday, November 11, Warsaw – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus had a meeting with the President of the Republic of Slovenia Danilo Turk in Warsaw, Poland.

The leaders of the two states discussed their bilateral relations and agreed on the need to develop them on various levels. The two presidents also talked about the need to keep regular contacts: to share their experience in regional cooperation and measures to overcome the global economic crisis.

Lithuania’s President noted that bilateral relations were invigorated by the opening of Lithuania’s diplomatic office in Ljubljana in the end of 2007.

“I believe Your embassy in Vilnius would additionally promote business structures to invest in Lithuania and Slovenia,” President Adamkus said.

Our leader invited Slovenia to support Lithuania’s candidature to the position of UNESCO Secretary General.

Lithuania’s and Slovenia’s presidents also discussed the decision adopted by the French Presidency of the EU to resume negotiations for a new partnership agreement between the EU and Russia. According to President Adamkus, despite the adoption of the decision Russia’s failure to implement its commitment to withdraw troops from Georgia must not be forgotten.

“We cannot turn our backs on Georgia and its people,” said the President of Lithuania and underlined the importance of using donor funds properly.

President Adamkus invited his Slovenian counterpart to visit Lithuania at a time convenient to him.

The President Adamkus also attended the presentation of the book about the life of his family, organised in Lithuania's Embassy. The book is a compilation of extracts from the President Adamkus's book of memories “Name of the Fate – Lithuania” and the book “Alma”. The book also contains certain speeches said by the President of the Republic of Lithuania on various occasions in Poland, reflecting the cooperation between the two countries and their strategic partnership.  The presentation of the book was also attended by the former President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski and staff-members of the office of Poland’s present President.
