Minister K. Budrys Congratulates Toronto Folk Dance Group "Gintaras" on Its 70th Anniversary
On May 10, the 70th anniversary of the Toronto folk dance group "Gintaras" was celebrated with a festive event in Toronto, Canada. At the gathering of choir members, friends, and the audience, Lithuania’s Ambassador Egidijus Meilūnas conveyed congratulations on behalf of Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys.
Minister Budrys expressed his gratitude for the invaluable contribution the group has made in uniting generations within the Lithuanian-Canadian community and preserving Lithuanian identity. He wished the members, friends, and supporters of "Gintaras" continued success in nurturing these traditions:
"Lithuania values the experience, creativity, and sense of community of every Lithuanian around the world – it is an inseparable part of our nation's strength. I encourage you to maintain a strong connection with the Homeland, share your ideas and talents, and contribute to building a modern, open, and thriving Lithuania," the Minister wrote.
In his message, the Minister also emphasized that the values nurtured by Lithuanian communities abroad – national identity, civic spirit, solidarity, and resilience against information threats – are especially important in today's geopolitical climate, as Ukraine fights for the freedom of the democratic world.
Ambassador Meilūnas expressed gratitude to Romas Janušonis, who has led the group for two decades, and to the entire "Gintaras" community for preserving the traditions of Lithuanian dance and promoting Lithuania’s national heritage in Canada and worldwide.
Founded in 1955, the "Gintaras" folk dance group has performed in many Canadian cities, visited Lithuanian communities across the globe, and showcased Lithuanian dance at diaspora festivals, world expos, and international events. The group has also delighted audiences at World Lithuanian Dance Festivals multiple times. Today, "Gintaras" includes more than 100 dancers of various ages.
In 2024, Gintaras was honored with Lithuania’s highest amateur arts award, the "Aukso paukštė" ("Golden Bird"), as the best Lithuanian amateur arts group abroad.
