Online event to commemorate Chiune Sugihara
On 8th-12th of December Embassies of Japan, Israel and Lithuania, together with The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Canadian Society for Yad Vashem and Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies organize virtual event – ‘Visas for Life’ and the bond of humanity: Sugihara Chiune’s courageous humanitarian act.
Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara was working in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1939-1940 and as the WWII began he issued transit visas, known as “Visas for Life”, for Jewish refugees allowing them to flee Europe and escape Holocaust.
To mark the 120th anniversary of Sugihara’s birth and the 80th anniversary of his mission in Kaunas the Parliament of Lithuania has pronounced the year 2020 as the Year of Sugihara in Lithuania.
During the upcoming event the life stories of “Sugihara visa” survivors and their descendants will be presented, special documentary and movie “Persona Non Grata” will be screened.
