Mission Siberia is now one of the biggest projects in Lithuania building social awareness and patriotism.
For about 300 000 people suffered from repressions caused by Soviet Union. More than 130 000 people were deported to Siberia and were forced to work without any payment. For this reason many people died and stayed in Siberia forever.
People started to talk more about history when Lithuanians became independent. All these harsh events inspired Lithuanians to become more patriotic. That is why a group of young people decided to create a project which helps to honour people who died in Siberia and builds social awareness and patriotism.
The idea of this project came up in 2005 when a resolution to build patriotism was approved at the General Assembly of Lithuanian Youth Council. Since then project was developed in different ways while creating social initiatives.
Since the start of the project, there have been 18 expeditions so far that have met with local Lithuanians and tidied up and put in order about 170 Lithuanian cemeteries. It is one of the most successful youth initiatives of all time regarding the promotion of citizenship. Mission Siberia is recognised and supported by politicians, the media, business and the cultural and academic communities.
Today “Mission Siberia” is one of the biggest projects in Lithuania and unites a huge community of people who care about the history of Lithuania.
