THE GROWTH OF FOREIGN TRADE IN LITHUANIA. JANUARY- SEPTEMBER 2008

Statistics Lithuania reports that according to non-final data obtained from customs declarations and Intrastat reporting data, exports in January–September 2008 totalled LTL 43.0 (EUR 12.5) billion in terms of commodity value, while imports to Lithuania equalled LTL 56.3 (EUR 16.3) billion. The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania made LTL 13.3 (EUR 3.9) billion and was by 1.0 % lower than a year ago. Data on trade with EU countries were adjusted having received VAT declarations’ data.

In January–September 2008 against January–September 2007, exports and imports increased, respectively, by 33.8 and 23.6 %; mineral products excluded, exports and imports increased, respectively, by 16.2 and 4.8 %.

The major impact on the growth of exports was made by the increase in exports of petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (2.4 times), fertilizers (97.9 %), cereals (2.6 times). Imports grew due to the increased imports of crude petroleum and natural gas (2.5 times), natural calcium phosphates and crude sulphur (3.7 times), railway or tramway locomotives, rolling stock and parts thereof (5 times), fertilizers (2.4 times).

In September 2008 against August 2008, exports and imports grew by, respectively, 5.1 and 9.5 %. In September 2008 against September 2007, exports and imports increased by, respectively, 40.8 and 25.6 %.
