VU Visit to Canada: New Opportunities for Research, Partnerships, and Community

The visit of Vilnius University Rector Rimvydas Petrauskas and his delegation to Toronto, coordinated by the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Canada, marked an important step in strengthening bilateral academic and cultural ties. During the visit, key agreements were reached and new partnerships were established.

Vilnius University will begin cooperation with the Lithuanian Museum-Archives of Canada, continuing research into the history of the first Lithuanian arrivals to Canada in the early 19th century. The museum’s director, Danguolė Breen, presented Rector R. Petrauskas with an exhibition prepared by the museum on Lithuanians’ participation in the fights for Canada in 1813–1815, as well as the rich history of the Lithuanian Canadian Community, which will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year.

During the visit, Lithuanian Ambassador Egidijus Meilūnas and Economic Counsellor Ingrida Darašaitė, together with the Vilnius University delegation, also visited the University of Toronto and York University. The meetings resulted in an agreement to strengthen academic cooperation and to expand opportunities for reciprocal student and faculty exchanges.

Another significant achievement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Vilnius University and McMaster University. The agreement covers cooperation in the fields of health and social sciences, the strengthening of international partnerships, knowledge exchange, and the development of new opportunities for innovation.

The visit was also marked by inspiring news from the Lithuanian community in Toronto. Lithuanian-Canadian specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Raimondas Zabieliauskas, pledged a donation of EUR 100,000 to the Vilnius University Endowment Fund. This meaningful philanthropic contribution will strengthen the University’s endowment and help attract and retain talented early-career researchers.

Overall, the visit once again demonstrated the strong engagement of the Lithuanian diaspora and opened new opportunities for academic and research cooperation between Lithuania and Canada.
