Ambassador Ginte Damusis met with two Members of Parliament – Bob Rae and Bryon Wilfert, at “A Discussion on Canadian Foreign Policy in the Baltic Region”, hosted by the Canadian-Estonian community in Toronto on April 12. Bob Rae, who has Lithuanian roots and visited Lithuania in 1990 to demonstrate support for the re-establishment of independence, is the Opposition Critic for Foreign Affairs. Bryon Wilfert is Opposition Critic for National Defence.

The event held at Tartu College brought together the ambassadors of the Baltic States and members of the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian communities to discuss informally foreign policy and other issues with the two Liberal Party MPs. The two-hour discussion touched upon such topics as the strengthening of Canadian representation in the Baltic States, Canadian foreign and trade policy priorities in the Baltic region and NATO affairs, including the mission in Afghanistan.

“Such events are very useful”, said Ambassador Damusis, “because they give audience members an opportunity to interact with their elected representatives and MPs get to hear what’s on the minds of their electorate. The Canadian-Baltic communities plan to hold discussions with other party representatives in the future”.
